AI coding assistant security: protecting source code and secrets

Coding assistants make developers faster. They also see your source code, configuration and sometimes your secrets, and the newest ones can run commands and call tools on their own.

In short

AI coding assistant security means controlling what code assistants and coding agents can see, send and do. The main risks are source code and credentials in prompts, personal accounts, unapproved extensions and MCP servers, and agents running commands. Controls combine approved tools, secrets hygiene, least privilege and inspection of prompts and agent actions in the IDE.

Why coding assistants need their own approach

A chat assistant in a browser sees what someone chooses to paste. A coding assistant sits inside the developer's editor and terminal, and depending on how it is set up it may read open files, whole repositories, configuration files and command output. Newer coding agents go further: they plan a task, edit many files, run tests and shell commands, and connect to external tools through the Model Context Protocol.

That brings three things together that security teams normally keep apart: your most valuable intellectual property (source code), your most sensitive secrets (keys, tokens, connection strings) and the ability to act (commands, commits, deployments). A generic AI acceptable use policy is a start, but developers need specific rules and specific controls.

AI coding assistant risks

These are the risks to plan for:

  • Source code leaving the organisation: code pasted into prompts or sent as context to an AI service the organisation has not approved, or used under terms that allow it to be retained.
  • Secrets and credentials in prompts: API keys, passwords and tokens in configuration files, environment files and logs travel with the code context.
  • Personal accounts: a developer using a personal subscription to a coding assistant, outside your organisation's agreement and controls.
  • Unapproved extensions and tools: AI extensions installed into editors without review, each with its own data handling.
  • Agents running commands: coding agents that can execute shell commands, modify files or delete resources, sometimes with broad local permissions.
  • MCP servers and connectors: developers connecting assistants to databases, ticketing systems or cloud consoles through MCP, often with their own credentials.
  • Prompt injection through repository content: instructions hidden in code comments, documentation, issues or dependencies that the assistant reads (see prompt injection).
  • Insecure suggestions: generated code that introduces vulnerabilities or unvetted dependencies, which still needs normal review and testing.

A policy for AI-assisted development

Your developer guidance should answer these questions clearly:

TopicWhat to decide
Approved assistantsWhich coding assistants and plans are approved, under organisational accounts only
Data in contextWhich repositories, file types and data may be shared with an assistant; what is excluded
SecretsThat secrets live in a secrets manager, not in code or files an assistant can read; what to do if one is exposed
Agent modeWhen autonomous or agent modes may be used, and which commands or actions need a person to approve
Extensions and MCPWho may install AI extensions and MCP servers, and how they are approved
ReviewThat AI-generated code goes through the same review, testing and dependency checks as any other code
ReportingHow to report a suspected leak or an assistant doing something unexpected

This sits naturally under your wider AI security policy.

Questions to ask about any coding assistant

Before approving a coding assistant or plan, check the supplier's own terms and admin documentation for answers to these questions:

  • Is code or prompt content used to train models on this plan, and can that be switched off centrally?
  • Where is data processed and stored, and for how long is it retained?
  • Can you sign in with organisational accounts through single sign-on, and stop personal accounts being used for work?
  • Which administrative controls exist for agent modes, extensions and MCP connections?
  • What logs are available to your security team?

The answers often differ between free, individual and business plans of the same product, which is one reason to standardise on business plans and to be able to tell managed from personal use.

Technical controls that work

Policy needs technical backing. A layered set of controls looks like this:

  • Approve and standardise the assistants and plans you allow, so you know the data terms that apply.
  • Remove secrets from code with a secrets manager and secret scanning, so there is less to leak in the first place.
  • Least privilege for agents: run coding agents with the minimum local and cloud permissions they need, and require confirmation for destructive commands.
  • Inspect what leaves the IDE: detect source code and credentials in prompts and uploads, and redact or block where policy says so.
  • Govern MCP and tools: allow approved MCP servers and tools, block risky operations such as deletes, and log tool calls.
  • Discover what is really in use: find the editors, desktop AI apps and agents developers run, including ones nobody approved.
  • Keep secure development practice: code review, testing and dependency scanning apply to AI-written code as much as human-written code.

The fourth, fifth and sixth points are where Check Point's Workforce AI Security Enterprise tier comes in.

How Workforce AI Security Enterprise covers coding assistants

Check Point says Workforce AI Security covers code assistants, naming GitHub Copilot and Cursor, along with MCP-connected workflows, and that its context-aware DLP detects personal data, credentials and source code in prompts, uploads and attachments. Its administration guide lists IDEs such as Cursor and VS Code that use AI coding assistance and MCP servers, plus ChatGPT Desktop, Claude Code and GitHub Copilot, among the desktop applications it discovers.

In practice that gives you:

  • Discovery of which coding assistants, desktop AI apps, agents and MCP servers developers use, and by whom.
  • Data protection at the prompt: detection of source code and secrets, with policy actions such as redact, ask the user to confirm, or block, and a notification that explains why.
  • Agent policies that allow or block specific MCP tools and operations, so an agent can read a ticket but not delete a database.
  • Managed vs unmanaged: different rules for organisational and personal accounts of the same tool.
  • Audit trails of prompts, uploads and agent activity for investigation.

Check Point's Enterprise tier covers web, desktop and IDEs, using the browser extension plus a desktop agent. The web-focused Essentials tier does not cover IDE coding assistants or desktop agents, so development teams normally need Workforce AI Security Enterprise. Which tier each group of users needs, and the detailed entitlements, are confirmed at quote.

Rolling it out with developers, not against them

Developers will be your harshest critics if controls slow them down. What works:

  1. Involve a few senior developers from day one and agree what good looks like.
  2. Start with discovery and monitoring only, and share what you find with the team.
  3. Agree the approved assistants and MCP servers before turning on any blocking.
  4. Turn on secrets and source code detection with redaction or warnings first, then blocks where the risk is clear.
  5. Restrict destructive agent operations, and review agent events together after the first few weeks.

The goal is to make the safe path the easy one, not to take AI away from engineers.

We work with businesses, schools, charities and public sector organisations. Our guides are general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI coding assistants a security risk?

They can be. They see source code and sometimes secrets, can send that context to an AI service, and in agent mode can run commands and call tools. Used through approved organisational accounts, with secrets kept out of code, least privilege for agents and inspection of prompts, the risk is manageable.

How do I stop developers pasting secrets into AI tools?

Keep secrets in a secrets manager rather than in code or files, scan repositories for secrets, and use AI data protection that detects credentials in prompts and uploads. Check Point Workforce AI Security can detect credentials and source code in prompts and uploads and redact, ask the user to confirm, or block according to policy.

Does Check Point Workforce AI Security cover GitHub Copilot and Cursor?

Check Point names GitHub Copilot and Cursor among the code assistants Workforce AI Security covers. IDE coverage is part of the Enterprise tier, which uses a desktop agent alongside the browser extension; the Essentials tier focuses on web applications.

Can I control what a coding agent is allowed to do?

Yes, for agents that use MCP. Workforce AI Security Enterprise agent policies can allow or block specific MCP tools and operations for chosen users, servers and platforms, so you can, for example, permit read operations while blocking deletions.

Should we ban AI coding assistants?

Usually not. Bans tend to push developers to personal accounts and unmanaged tools. A better route is to approve business-grade assistants, set clear rules, and use discovery and data protection to enforce them.
